is there a simple way to rip mp3 files from a streaming quicktime website? besides just playing and recording them with a third program? the site i am trying to get it from [my uni] has the link setup with java script so i can't find the source location, however the while file does seem to load before it plays... if that makes sense.

smashing magazine & poster crit
Rather than make two separate posts, I'm just going to have a double topic entry here.
First, did anyone else notice our Niki Brown featured in Smashing Magazine today? I saw the mice and was like heyyyyy.... those look familiar! And then I thought, wow, I am wayy too in to this community.

And then I need some crit on a poster I'm designing for a local band. Here's a thumbnail of the poster so you know what's behind the cut:
( larger + 2 other variations )

I've googled this and checked tags in communities but the only results i'm getting are programs to transfer songs from my device to the computer and that's not what i want to do:
Is there a way I can listen to the music on my iPhone through iTunes without transferring the songs onto my computer. Like in the library of the iPhone that comes up, to listen to those tracks. I know I used to be able to do this with my iPod but I don't know if it's just the phone, the new itunes, or if there's a setting I need to change, but the songs are gray and unclickable.

webcam recording software that compresses on the fly?
This might be kind of a long shot, but I figured I'd ask just in case...
Is anyone aware of an OSX application that will take audio and video input from a webcam and save it out immediately in a highly compressed format, such as H.264?
Currently we use bTV in a lab setting. Language students will record short clips of converation, and bTV saves it out in a very byte-heavy format (I think the default is something like DV). This would be ideal if we intended to edit and reuse the files, but in this use case we don't. The students just immediately drop them into Quicktime Pro and further compress them to make them conveniently small in size, and this of course takes time.
My thought is, these machines are dual processor G5s, it seems to me like they should be able to handle some degree of compression on the fly (though I'm not sure how much). It's not a huge deal but it would be neat if a different software choice could eliminate the second step in the process.

Fyi: CS4 Trials are up!
I got a nice little notice in my inbox from Adobe titled, "what can you do in 30 days?" Which means, YAY, the trials are up and running on the Adobe website. Just wanted to let any of you who are like me (that is, poor students who very much appreciate the trial software as it means less trips to a computer lab!) or any who are curious what they've changed.

quick question re: Leopard
Howdy all. Quick question.
So, I've got two macs...one is a brand new iMac, with all the bells and whistles and, most importantly, Leopard.
Now, my other mac is a 4-year-old Powerbook G4 running Tiger (10.4.10 if you really want to know).
My question is this: Can I use my backup discs from my iMac to upgrade my Powerbook to Leopard? I'd love to buy another copy of the operating system, as I have no real reason to pirate because I've been an Apple fan since the womb, but as a college student nearing the end of a semester, the money begins to wear thin.
No ethical debates here, please; if you want to pay for my education, I'll gladly fork over the 120-some-odd dollars for another copy of Leopard.
Thanks!

Flash CS3 help!
Hi everyone,
I am using Lynda.com and going to a free class to learn beginning Flash for work. I am a newbie and picking up actionscript has been particularly tricky for me and overall I feel like it's a very steep learning curve.. I am wondering if anyone could recommend a good, solid book on Flash design - something that would take me into intermediate and possibly advanced techniques. I will be using Flash primarily for ads, web design and video for our websites at work. Lynda.com is great but I feel like it's not complete. A book would be awesome too... or links. Any info would be appreciated!

I think I broke iTunes. Last night, my MacBook was sitting on the table. Being the clumsy type that I am, I got my foot stuck on a cord & knocked it off, The MacBook was open & iTunes was on. It seems ok now, except that iTunes keeps "cycling." Whenever I wake up my computer, it makes a sound like it's trying to eject a CD. It does that 3 or 4 times, then it's fine. Any ideas? Did I break it?
UPDATE: There really was a CD in there. I finally got it out by restarting & holding down the trackpad button.

i might be slightly macocidal right now
imac 20' G5, PPC, was running OSX. screen freeze, reboot, grey screen with the spinner and the screaming cries of the fan.
put the imac cd-rom in, c-click it, and it goes straight to install. archives and backs up the old system. grand.
now it reboots with the old name 'imac Uchuu Jin' and asks for name and password. which i seem to have a temporary brain tumour, because it isn't accepting what it was before and not giving me any clues as to how to find it. i can't log into it from my macbook because it's not showing up in my network.
so, kind helpful people...what do i feed this beast to make him roll over onto his back and let me stab him in the belly with a big huge scalpel?
